Léo Buhler
Leo Buhler is Professor of Surgery at the University of Fribourg and the Fribourg Cantonal Hospital, Switzerland.
He joined the institute in 2026
After qualifying in medicine from the University of Geneva, Dr Buhler trained in surgery at the University Hospital of Geneva, and at the Massachussetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School (MA, USA). He is currently head of the Surgical Research Unit at the University of Fribourg.
Dr Buhler is author or co-author of over 250 articles published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr Buhler’s specialties include kidney and cell xenotransplantation. His research projects include isolation and transplantation of pancreatic islets and hepatocytes, as well as the induction of immune tolerance to allogeneic and xenogeneic antigens. Dr Buhler is past-president of the International Xenotransplantation Association (2017-2019) and he is the Editor in Chief of the Journal “Xenotransplantation” since 2012.
