Raphael Meier
Raphael P. H. Meier, MD, PhD, is a liver, kidney, and pancreas transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon, and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
He joined the institute in 2025
He completed his medical training and general surgery residency at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, followed by advanced fellowship training in abdominal transplant surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. Meier’s work bridges clinical transplantation and translational science, with a strong focus on xenotransplantation and innovative strategies to expand the organ donor pool. His research includes the development of genetically engineered and microencapsulated mesenchymal stem cells, advanced cell and islet transplantation approaches, and immune modulation strategies to improve graft survival. He currently serves as a Councilor of the International Xenotransplantation Association, contributing to international scientific and regulatory efforts to advance xenogeneic organ and cell therapies toward clinical application and address the global organ shortage.
